brother’s gotta hug

It’s hot as hell in our house. I hate it. I wish it would stay in the 70’s all year, would that be too much to ask? Just about time for the AC to be turned on.

Spent a 3 day weekend in Carlsbad, CA this past weekend. It was a perfect mini-vacation. Hanging out with my brother and his girlfriend was great, and i really enjoyed the not so crowded beaches and area that Carlsbad has to offer. It really was one of the better getaways i have ever had…i think because none of us cared about doing anything other than just hanging out on the beach. Nobody was needing to chase girls, and my brother and i don’t need to feel like we needed to entertain each other. It was about as relaxing as it gets. I’m not a big fan of southern california, but i would go back to Carlsbad again if it were with the right people/person.

Stevie and i got pretty burnt the first day we were there, and he couldn’t even really be out in the sun the next day. Of course Meredith was completely fine even though she was out in the sun the same amount of time. Not really sure how girls always manage to keep an even tan, but it always happens and i always get toasted. Luckily i had a head start on him from living in sunny Arizona, so i was fine the next day. But the poor guy looked like he had 3rd degree burns. Hopefully that doesn’t ruin his vacation.

As much of a midwesterner i really am, i think at some point in my life i will need to return to living on or near a beach. Walking for miles on a beach is my peak relaxation point. It just doesn’t get any better, and it’s one of the only times when i don’t feel in a hurry to get anywhere. Just keep walking. I absolutely love it, the less people the better.

Gap Year

Should your child have a ‘gap year’ before college?

Some students need a break after high school — and some colleges approve

Princeton encourages it. Harvard’s a big fan. From Tufts to MIT, some of the most prestigious universities in the nation are urging students to consider something that would make most parents cringe: The idea of putting off college for a year in favor of some much-needed downtime.

It’s called a “gap year.” And while it’s been a common and popular rite of passage in Australia and the U.K. for decades, the concept is now starting to gain significant steam here in America.

Why? A growing number of high school seniors are balking at riding the academic conveyer belt from preschool all the way to university. They’re burnt out. Or not quite ready. Or they want to explore a few interests before deciding what to study in college. So instead of packing their bags in anticipation of freshman year, they’re volunteering in New Orleans or teaching in Thailand. They’re starting the great American novel, or interning to help figure out what they want to do with their lives.

This is something i definitely should of done after high school.  I had no clue what i wanted to do and I think spending a year doing something else in the real world could of really put me on a better path than screwing around in college for a few years. Interested to see if this takes off in the States. I’m sure it’s probably 50/50 on who might benefit and who is ready to go straight to college.

Aisle or Window…hmmm

This week flew by, i guess because i kept myself busy or was kept busy. Headed to Carlsbad tomorrow morning for a long weekend to hang out with my little broham while he is on vacation. So i guess it’s a mini vacation for myself, something i don’t do nearly enough. It will be cool to see him. I am not a huge fan of southern california because it’s just too crowded for my taste. Although spending a few days there on the beach isn’t such a bad thing i guess. I love being at the ocean, something very calming and spiritual about it. I guess that’s why it’s so crowded.

Cubs just lost on a walk-off home run by a guy who had never hit a home run before. Typical Cubdom.

I just barely made the A group for my Southwest airlines flight tomorrow. We’ll see if that turns out to be good or bad. Gotta love quick flights though.

My room needs a serious dusting and cleaning. I have no furniture though, so it’s just a matter of putting things in nice piles.

It was good to talk to Grammy today. Hopefully i get home to see the fam soon. She sounded full of life as always.

You sound like you’re from London!

Had a pretty good weekend by my standards. Had a roommate date on friday night with Nick and Jonah. We went to Chili’s to eat and then to see the movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”. I thought it was a really solid movie and would recommend it to anybody between the age of 18 and 50.  My favorite exchange in the movie went as follows:

Matthew: I have a question for you real quick. What did you think of my demo? Did you get it?
Aldous Snow: I was gonna listen to that, but then, um, I just carried on living my life.

And even more reason i liked the movie was because of:

:mila kunis

Then saturday i went to the home depot and bought myself a shovel and some sheers and went to work on the shrubs. They look a little better now i think.

Then last night we watched the Bernard Hopkins fight, which was horrible. Then today i battled Phoenix Nick in some more ping pong, had to revenge getting beat 10 straight times by him yesterday. Today wasn’t much better, winning only 2 of 7. I’m really not bad, i just am not playing well. I truly think i injured my shoulder from playing ping pong as well. It was really hurting me today and still is, and i’m not sure what else it would be from. I got way too much sun today, didn’t have any sunscreen to put on.  I even jumped in our freezing cold pool today for a brief bit. And of course i did other things this weekend, but those were the highlights….or maybe lowlights if whoever is reading this actually has an adult life.

I’ve never had such bad allergies in my life. I woke up at 4am last night because of allergies. I’ve been taking zyrtex like crazy of late. They actually work well, but when they wear off, i am in trouble. Cannot wait for allergy season to be over.

So now i sit here debating on whether or not to watch Ratatouille tonight. Decisions decisions.

high school reunion

Posted in life with tags , , , on April 18, 2008 by Joe Sanders

Twas a busy week at work. Stayed up too late just about every night, made it more difficult to get out of bed in the mornings. Nice to have the weekend here. Not sure what’s on the docket this weekend. A few movies out i want to see.

So my 10 year Kokomo high school reunion is supposed to be this summer. Class of 98′. Pretty crazy to think it has already been 10 years since i graduated. I am not sure i want to go to it. Their are a few people i wouldn’t mind seeing, but most of my friends from kokomo i have kept in pretty good touch with. I only lived there for 2 years, so i didn’t know a whole lot of people like most of my classmates would have. I almost think it would be more interesting to go to the Columbus North High School reunion and see some of the people i went to school from 5th grade to sophomore year of high school with. I think for me that would be more like a reunion because i grew up with a lot of those people, even though i haven’t kept in touch with most of them. It would be interesting to see how a lot of them turned out.

However, with the advent of myspace and facebook, i think reunions have probably lost a little bit of their luster. You can pretty much look up just about anybody on the internet these days and see what they are up to. It’s not like you show up and are shocked by seeing somebody, now you just myspace somebody you are curious about and there they are. I guess it would be a lot of fun to hang out as a big group with everybody though, relive the glory days of yesteryear. Most of my guy friends are still single and most of my girl friends are married. Funny how that works. Of course in high school all of us guys never dated anybody, and the girls always had boyfriends. I guess some things never change, and probably won’t for a while. Hell, the girls will be getting divorced before any of us ever get hitched for the first time.

I’m not sure a 10 year reunion is really necessary actually. Many people at 28 still are finding their way in life. I think a little more time is needed, maybe 15 years before anybody should go to a reunion and talk about what they are up to and the amazing things they are doing. I’m sure lots of lies are told at 10 year reunions, trying to impress people.

Should be interesting to see what happens and if I decide to go….if we even have one.

it’s hot

Posted in life with tags , , , on April 14, 2008 by Joe Sanders

It’s getting to warm for my liking. Getting any higher than 90 is too much for me in the spring time, and we have reached that mark. Apparantley we are waiting to turn on the AC, because it’s way too hot in my room. No more sleeping in sweats, that’s for sure. Probably won’t even need a blanket tonight. Just not ready for this weather. I looked at a sweatshirt in my closet today and totally felt sad that it was going to be many more months before i could put it on.

boys of summer

Posted in Home with tags , , , on April 10, 2008 by Joe Sanders

I remember one summer during my college days when my buddies and i were out playing home run derby at the high school softball field. We typically play on the softball fields so we didn’t have to use real baseballs, meaning we wouldn’t have to chase the tennis balls we used as far. Those were always some of the best times i’ve had with my friends, and i’m sure before it’s over their will be a few more home run derby battles (never too old to play baseball). But this one time in particular, i remember my buddy Taf saying, “wouldn’t it be cool if Thatch made the big leagues and played for the Cubs”. Thatch was one of our high school buddies we played on the basketball team with, but rarely played home run derby with because he was a real baseball player unlike the rest of us!!

It’s such a long shot for anybody to make the big leagues, so when Taf made the comment, we all said “yeah, that would be cool”, but i’m sure none of us thought it would ever really happen. Not because he wasn’t good, but it’s just that difficult to make the bigs. Growing up a baseball fan, becoming a professional baseball player always was the dream of many of us, at least for me it definitely was.

The cool thing is that Thatch actually made it last year. So to see one of your friends make the big leagues is a very cool thing, and almost surreal. What makes it even more surreal, is that i have him on my fantasy team this year! Anyway, to some this might be dumb, but i just think it’s really neat.

Here is a article that was on the padres website today about Thatch.

Thatcher goes back to basics vs. SF
After struggling in earlier close game, reliever bounces back

SAN DIEGO — Five days after his roughest and clearly most humbling outing in his short Major League career, Joe Thatcher found himself back on the mound in yet another close game, this time at AT&T Park.Determined to stash away forever the lingering memories — or, as it were, a nightmare — of an inning last week during which he walked three and got just one out, Thatcher decided to follow his own advice, the words of wisdom that helped the left-hander reach the big leagues after a humble beginning.

Thatcher, let it loose.

Thatcher retired six of the seven batters he faced in Wednesday’s eventual 3-2 loss to the Giants in 11 innings, but he showed that his outing against the Dodgers on April 4 was nothing but a simple misstep in a long season.

“I talked with [pitching coach Darren] Balsley after that outing, talked about what I was thinking out there … as far as how to attack guys in the strike zone,” Thatcher said. “It wasn’t anything mechanical. Everything feels good. We’re going to write it off as a bad day.”

Granted, there haven’t been many bad days since Thatcher joined the Padres last July in the deal — an unpopular one at the time among players — that sent Scott Linebrink to the Brewers for three pitchers who had never seen a day in the Major Leagues.

Thatcher went 2-2 with a 1.29 ERA in 22 games after being recalled from Triple-A Portland, earning the trust of manager Bud Black with a stretch of strong performances out of the bullpen, especially in September, when he had a 1.13 ERA.

That performance and a strong Spring Training earned Thatcher a spot in the bullpen as one of the relievers used to set up closer Trevor Hoffman, though as is occasionally the case with Hoffman, the road to late-inning success is sometimes a bumpy one.

Not that Thatcher isn’t accustomed to his share of twists and turns, as the 26-year-old was undrafted out of Indiana State University before pitching parts of two seasons for River City of the independent Frontier League before the Brewers signed him in July 2005.

“I love playing baseball, when I went to play independent ball, I went for fun,” Thatcher said. “I knew I could pitch at the next level, but mostly, I wanted to play to have fun. It was a long shot, but every chance I got to prove myself I let it all hang out. I really had nothing to lose.

“That’s kind of the approach I took last year. No matter what was going on around me, I was just going to go after it 100 percent.”

Thatcher nearly turned his back on baseball in 2005. After earning a degree in insurance and risk management, Thatcher got certified to sell insurance in his home state and got a job selling commercial insurance in his hometown of Kokomo, Ind.

“I got a little taste of the 9-to-5, sitting behind a desk and wearing a tie,” Thatcher said. “That’s the other thing that motivated me [to pursue baseball]. That’s not something I wanted to do. When Spring Training came around, I was glad to get out of there.”

Thatcher pitched parts of three seasons in the Brewers farm system before the Padres traded for him and pitcher Will Inman and Steve Garrison. Inman was considered the gem of the deal, though Thatcher arrived in the Major Leagues first.

Not a day goes by, Thatcher said, where he isn’t thankful for his opportunity to pitch in the Major Leagues.

“Every day, something reminds me that I’m here,” Thatcher said. “Two years ago, I was playing in front of 2,000 people, making $600 a month. I talked with some guys I played back there with [and] one guy is still pitching there. It does make you appreciate the ride more.”

Staying here, though, is the tough part. Thatcher, if nothing else, has shown the ability to get both left-handed and right-handed hitters out, using a cut fastball that runs in on the hands of right-handers to get outs.

In his last outing Tuesday in San Francisco, Thatcher showed a more consistent release point, something that troubled him against the Dodgers. He got right-handers and left-handers out and showed why the Padres have entrusted him with important innings late in games.

“I did think his delivery looked as smooth as Joe can make it look. I thought that he was repeating his delivery,” Black said. “Everyone has their own unique style, but it looked like Joe was repeating his arm slot. His ball had a nice cut action to it.

“Collectively, for us to have an effective bullpen, it takes all of the guys … not just two or three guys throwing well. To win games, a series, to win a stretch of games, you need all seven guys pitching well. Joe is a very important part of that.”

tired

Posted in Home with tags , , , on April 9, 2008 by Joe Sanders

i’ve been running around like a mad man the past two days. Tonight it caught up with me and i am exhausted. Unfortunately i have to get up super early in the morning, hopefully i can sneak out of work a little early tomorrow. Doubt it.

I’m ready to get home and see the family. It’s been a while. Hoping to see Stevo if i can meet him in cali in a few weeks when he is out there.

I’m really hungry, only had a small salad for dinner. Too tired to go get something else.

Haven’t been sleeping well this week. Not sure what it is, but just haven’t. I think work is stressing me out too much.

Looking very much forward to the weekend and getting out of town.

pillow fight League

Posted in Home with tags , on April 7, 2008 by Joe Sanders

These days, i guess their isn’t really anything that somebody hasn’t come up with. For example, here is the link to the PFL(Pillow Fight League).

“We’re fun. We’re fierce. And most definitely, we are fighters. We are women who are proud of our strength, and not afraid to let loose. So why fight with pillows? Because it lets us be creative, do something different, and go a little crazy. And not only do we get to entertain a dedicated fan base in Toronto, the best city in the world, we also get to travel to some amazing places and do what we do best. We don’t fight in sports bars, we don’t take off our clothes, and we don’t script the fights. To quote the Commish, “It’s not pillow fighting. It’s fighting with pillows.” Trust me, there is a difference.”

Want to be a fighter? Join the PFL. Call 416.203.2389 or email thepfl@gmail.com to set it all in motion.
